We'd like to get serious a moment.  Ham radio is fun but it also provides a public service during times of emergency.  Nothing made this more evident than the traffic handled during the hurricane season and the “Blizzard of '06”.

Now is the time for all active amateur radio operators and groups such as ARES, RACES, ARPSC and Red Cross to prepare for the next disaster. Let’s not fool ourselves; there WILL be a next time.  Let’s use what we have learned--some hams were prepared, most were not!

Nobody wants to be stuck for days in their own home without electricity, having no telephone, no TV, no radio...and after a short time...no cell phone.  There is absolutely no reason for any licensed ham to be without essential communication in such situations! 

Recently, some ham magazines began promoting "Emergency Stations" costing well over a thousand dollars, some having questionable utility.  We whole heartedly agree that there is a need,  but  believe an effective, low cost, low power consumption alternative which can be quickly placed into service in the event of a wide area emergency situation is a better approach.
